Daily fix for all the art history lovers on tumblr.
Histoire is simply the French word for history, but it also has the dual meaning of story. That's what art is. The history of our human story.

This is my second tattoo a day after it was done. It was done by Rev Jay at Tatmandu in Walla Walla, WA. I’m an art history major and this is from a ready-made piece from 1919 by Marcel Duchamp. He took a cheap postcard of the Mona Lisa and drew a mustache and goatee on her and wrote L.H.O.O.Q. at the bottom of it which is a pun. When the letters are pronounced in French, they sound like a phrase, “Elle a chaud au cul” which loosely translates as “She’s hot for it”. By doing so, he made the gender of the Mona Lisa ambiguous. Duchamp’s whole point of his ready-mades was to make viewers see from a new perspective. Duchamp did his own thing and didn’t care if it pissed people off. He’s always been an artist that stood out to me.
